Associated with the harsh rule of the Bourbon monarchy in the late 1700s, the storming of the Bastille was a pivotal event at the beginning of the French Revolution.
On July 14, 1789, troops stormed this medieval fortress and prison in Paris and since then, Fête de la Fédération has been held on July 14 1790 as a way to celebrate the establishment of a constitutional monarchy in France.
Today, Parisians celebrate this national holiday with a grand military parade up the Champs Elysée, colorful arts festivals, and raucous parties marking the holiday.
