Gin needs no introduction, let’s face it, a Gin and Tonic is the quintessentially British drink and the scourge of the 18th Century up until now. No one enjoys a cool bottle of beer better than in the summer time or a warm, earthy red wine in the winter, but the versatility of Gin means it can be enjoyed all year round and is the reason for its recent resurgence in popularity. Gin was born around 1689. The earliest known food pairing occurred in 1731 when Gin was paired with gingerbread. This became quite common and is still traditional in parts of England.
The English actually discovered gin when they were fighting the Thirty Years’ War in the 17th century in Holland and saw Dutch soldiers drinking Jenever to boost morale before heading into battle. Hence, the term “Dutch Courage” was born.
Franciscus Sylvius, a Dutch chemist, allegedly invented gin in the 16th Century, as an attempt to cleanse the blood of those suffering from kidney disorders.
Gin and tonic can help fight Malaria! The quinine in tonic water is what really helps malaria but it has a bitter taste when complemented by the addition of gin. That’s the reason why British colonialists in India started to drink this combination in the first place.
